Fort Lauderdale

Editor's Rating - 3 stars

While Fort Lauderdale is an attractive seaside city, most cruisers miss the highlights and make their way to their cruise terminal at Port Everglades. However taking a stroll along the enjoyable Riverwalk, or a having a relax on the beach, is the ideal way to spend some time if you arrive a day early for your cruise.

Editor's Top Tip

Port Everglades is divided into two sets of terminals, those located at northport, and those are located at midport.  Shared shuttles normally visit both sets of terminals, so make sure that you can off at the correct one.  Large signs over the road at the port entrance show which cruise ship is berthed at which terminal.

Things To See

Stranahan House is the city's oldest house.  It was constructed as a trading outpost for transactions with the Seminole Indians, but also came into use as a school, a post office and a community center.  Guided visits are offered each day, see the internet for times. The house is located just off Las Olas Blvd by the New River.

Museum Of Art Fort Lauderdale
Many people’s favorite gallery at the Museum of Art is the Indigo Room, a backlit painting on pexiglass by the Voodoo influenced artist Edouard Duval-Carrié.  Also the museum works hard to keep its appeal fresh by presenting a good variety of temporary exhibitions.

Fort Lauderdale History Center
The Fort Lauderdale History Center tells the history of the local community from the settlers of Fort Lauderdale to the citizens of today.  Structures that make up part of the center date from the early 1900s and include the Philemon Bryan House, the Acetylene building and the New River Inn.

Museum of Discovery and Science
Put aside half a day to discover investigating lots of fascinating exhibits at the city’s Museum of Discovery and Science.  Learn how astronomers unravel the fascinating mysteries of space in the space hall.  Set your watch by the biggest kinetic energy sculpture in Florida, the 50 feet tall Great Gravity Clock.  Jump into a garbage truck and explore with Harry The Heap, the robot.  Wonder at the miracle of the human body, at the Powerful Heatlh Team and Powerful Pulse exhibits.  Gain knowledge about the important role of minerals in our everyday life at the Minerals Rock exhibit.

John U Lloyd Beach State Park
The spectacular beach at John U Lloyd State Park is perhaps the most undeveloped near Fort Lauderdale.  It's 2 miles long, running from the Port Everglades inlet channel to the Dania Beach pier, and has bathrooms and outdoor showers.  The  beachside café serves tasty seafood.  The beach is sited a short drive from the port.

South Beach Park
At the southern end of Fort Lauderdale’s lovely beaches sits South Park Beach, a lively stretch of golden sand.  The lifeguard patrolled beach is backed by an artistic whitewashed wall, and wide promenade. The beach is perfectly suited for picnicking, relaxing, swimming and beach games.  Across busy Hwy 1A many fooderies and bars serve great food and drink.
